ParPath vs TheGrint

TheGrint is a popular golf app, but getting a handicap now requires their Pro subscription (~$59.99/yr) plus a separate GHIN purchase from the USGA. ParPath includes WHS handicap calculation in Pro ($99.99/yr) alongside GPS, Break X strategy, and multiplayer — all in one subscription.

Handicap Tracking Shouldn’t Cost $100/Year

Since 2022, GHIN numbers must be purchased directly from the USGA — they are no longer bundled with TheGrint subscriptions. That means getting a handicap through TheGrint now requires two separate purchases: TheGrint Pro (~$59.99/yr) for score posting and stat tracking, plus a GHIN number from the USGA (~$25-40/yr). That is potentially $85-100 per year just to have an official handicap.

For golfers who play in sanctioned tournaments and need that official GHIN number, there is no way around it. But for the vast majority of casual golfers who just want to know their handicap, the WHS formula does the same calculation. Take your score differentials, select the lowest ones, average them, multiply by 0.96. That is the entire algorithm.

ParPath calculates your WHS handicap index as part of Pro ($99.99/yr) — same WHS algorithm, not an official GHIN number, but you also get GPS distances, Break X course strategy, multiplayer, and advanced stats. One subscription covers everything. If you need an official GHIN for tournament play, you can purchase that separately from USGA regardless of which scoring app you use.

Group Scoring That Actually Syncs

TheGrint has linked scorecards for group play, but users report occasional sync issues. Scores sometimes do not update for other players, and scorecards can go out of sync mid-round. When you are trying to keep score for a foursome, unreliable sync turns a useful feature into a frustrating one.

ParPath uses push notifications for real-time score sync. When you update a score, everyone in the group gets it immediately via Apple Push Notifications. No polling, no manual refresh, no hoping the data eventually catches up.

Even better, scores appear on everyone’s lock screen via iOS Live Activities. You do not need to keep the app open. Glance at your lock screen between shots and see where your group stands. That is multiplayer scoring that works the way it should.

A Strategy System, Not Just a Scorecard

TheGrint tracks your rounds and calculates your handicap. That is useful. But knowing you are an 18 handicap does not tell you how to become a 15. Knowing your GIR percentage does not tell you which holes to attack and which ones to play safe.

ParPath’s Break X system gives you a target score for every hole on your course. Pick a goal — Break 80, Break 90, Break 100 — and you get a color-coded strategy. Green means attack: this is a scoring opportunity. Yellow means manage: play for par, accept bogey. Red means survive: bogey is a win, avoid the double.

When you have a plan before you step on the tee, you stop making the same mistakes. You stop going for pins on the hardest holes. You stop playing conservative on the holes where you should be aggressive. Play the strategy, lower the score. That is something a handicap tracker alone cannot give you.

What TheGrint Users Are Saying

Common complaints from TheGrint users — and how ParPath addresses them.

TheGrint used to bundle GHIN with its Pro subscription, but now charges separately — meaning you could pay $40/yr for TheGrint Pro plus $55–65/yr for GHIN through your state association. That’s $95–105/yr just for a handicap and an app. ParPath Pro is $99.99/yr (or $9.99/mo) and includes WHS handicap calculation, GPS distances, Break X course strategy, and full stats — everything in one subscription.
Multiple TheGrint reviewers report the Apple Watch losing sync mid-round. One 5-year user cancelled because “over the last year, Grint stopped syncing with my Apple Watch — it would work for some of the holes but every round I would have to restart.” ParPath’s Live Activity shows your scorecard directly on the iPhone lock screen — no watch sync needed. When you do use the Apple Watch, it’s a companion, not a dependency.
This reviewer switched back to 18Birdies specifically because TheGrint’s GPS was unreliable, with distances oscillating before settling. ParPath uses standard phone GPS with distances to front, middle, and back of green — straightforward readings without the instability.
TheGrint lets you enter club distances but doesn’t use that data to suggest clubs during a round. This reviewer specifically asked why their bag data wasn’t being put to use. ParPath’s Break X system approaches this differently: rather than recommending individual clubs, it gives you a target score and strategy for every hole — so you make smarter decisions about when to be aggressive and when to play safe.
Multiple reviewers describe TheGrint’s interface as “clunky,” “confusing,” and “dated.” One user trying to switch from 18Birdies said they “hated it — the interface just seemed worse.” ParPath is built with a modern iOS-native design, Live Activities on the lock screen, and a clean interface designed for quick input between shots.
